The High 5 Habit

Have you heard of Mel Robbins and her book The High 5 Habit?  I think Mel is so inspiring, encouraging and motivating and I love the simple, powerful and effective tools that she shares in her book.  Mel shares scientific research on how the act of giving and receiving high fives can lift our mood and give us more confidence.

When you wake up in the morning, high five your heart, by placing your hand on your heart, taking a deep breath and saying, I’m okay, I’m safe, I'm loved.  Then walk into the bathroom and instead of ignoring yourself in the mirror or picking out all of your flaws, lift your hand up and give yourself a high five in the mirror.

The first time I did this, it felt strange and awkward, but I couldn’t stop myself from smiling a little bit as my brain felt a quick surge of dopamine.  This simple act of self love is a way of saying, you got this, let’s do this.

Try doing this every day for a few weeks and see if you start enjoying the habit and if you start looking forward to giving yourself this boost every day.  You may learn to start cheering yourself on, discover how to truly be there for yourself and take care of your needs.

As I’ve heard Mel say, you deserve to be celebrated exactly as you are.  Instead of judging yourself and any mistakes from your past, start believing in yourself and what is possible for your future.  We all need to be seen, to be heard and to be loved.  Let’s start doing that for ourselves and model that to our children too.  I believe in you, you got this!
