Two Ingredient Sweet Treat

I first learned about this simple sweet treat idea from the book A Mind of Your Own by Kelly Brogan.  Reading this book inspired me to change my diet and begin my natural healing journey.

Highly motivated to do whatever could possibly help my mental health, I was up for this shift in my eating habits.  If eliminating gluten and avoiding baked goods containing white flour and sugar would help, I was willing to give it a try.

At that time, eating a bagel or muffin for breakfast and having cookies and brownies after lunch and dinner was part of my daily routine.  Since I ran every day, I felt like I could eat whatever I wanted.

After I read this book, I was motivated to eat mostly whole foods for my mind and mood.  I also learned about other more healthy dessert options such as a few squares of dark chocolate and almond butter or a handful of raw almonds and some semi-sweet or dark chocolate chunks.

If you don’t have a sweet tooth and could go without dessert, there is no need to add chocolate to your diet.  But if you love chocolate and you’d like to eat a healthier type of chocolate that could have some health benefits, you may enjoy this super simple treat.

If you are allergic to nuts or chocolate or have sensitivities to either ingredient, this isn’t for you.  If I ate the whole chocolate bar, I would get a headache and a stomach ache.  And if I had dark chocolate in the evening, I would have trouble falling asleep at night.  If I eat the right amount for me, at the right time, I can enjoy the delicious taste and enjoy the health benefits too.

Dark chocolate is rich with antioxidants, including flavonoids and polyphenols.  The cocoa butter found in chocolate contains healthy fats. Almonds are low in saturated fatty acids, contain fiber, antioxidants and plant-based protein.  They are also a good source of trace minerals, including magnesium and phosphorus.
